Macedonia is the largest and second most populous region of Greece. Macedonia is divided into three peripheries - West, Central and East Macedonia, comprising thirteen prefectures
or nomoi. It covers an area of some 34,231 km² (13,217 square miles) and it has a population of 2,625,681.Its capital
and largest city is Thessaloniki. The Greeks who live
there are called Macedonians. The name probably
derives from the greek adjective makednós, meaning "tall".
